High Fructose Corn Syrup Linked To Autism 
High fructose corn syrup may be more harmful than the corn industry would like us to think. A recent peer-reviewed study has shown the detrimental effects of high fructose corn syrup.
The study compared the autism prevalence between the U.S. and Italy. The toxicology model used in this study suggests that the recent rise of autism in the U.S. is not due to mercury exposure from fish, coal power plants, etc. but is instead due to the consumption of high fructose corn syrup.
High fructose corn syrup, a manmade sweetener can be found in a range of processed foods from breads, yogurts to ketchup.
The consumption of high fructose corn syrup is significantly high in the U.S. and is rarely consumed in Italy, thus Italy was used as more of a control for this study.
In the study it was noted that consuming high fructose corn syrup may lead to mineral imbalances affecting the body’s ability to produce and uptake nutrients such as zinc, calcium and phosphates. Additionally, there may be a gain of copper which is a possible source of inorganic mercury exposure.
These mineral imbalances not only lead to decreasing the ability to eliminate toxins from the body such as mercury and pesticides, but also are a source of oxidative stress in the brain.
These imbalances may contribute to developmental disorders due to the impact during neurodevelopment. The article stated the cause of autistic behaviors may be due to the mothers prenatal diet or due to the dietary exposure of the children.
This study further demonstrates the acute implications consuming high fructose corn syrup has on our health. Even though the corn industry still advertises trying to mislead consumers that it is safe, there is now more evidence out there that it is not.
To avoid high fructose corn syrup in your foods make sure you read all of the ingredients of any processed products you buy. Many companies are now starting to include a label on containers stating that the product does not contain high fructose corn syrup.
