  • Sexual intercourse also triggers bladder infection.

  • Pregnant women are prone to cystitis because pregnancy tends to hamper emptying of the bladder.

  • Use of a diaphragm increases the risk of developing bladder inflammation, because of the spermicide used with the diaphragm, which suppresses the natural vaginal flora and bacteria that cause cystitis thus proliferate.

  • Reduction in estrogen after menopause also predisposes a woman to recurrent episodes of cystitis.

  • Persistent bacterial infection of the prostate is a common cause in men.

  • Bladder or kidney stone obstructs the urine flow, and thus increases the chances of bladder inflammation.

  • Cystitis may occur due to a catheter or any instrument introduced in to the urinary tract.

  • Interstitial cystitis is painful inflammation of the bladder, but demonstrates no indication of infection. It is usually chronic.
