What is Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s palsy is an acute, apparently isolated, lower motor neuron palsy for which no cause has been found. Bell’s palsy is the most common disease of the facial nerve disorder. Incidence is 23/100,000 per year. It affects man and women equally and is also seen at all ages.

  • Onset is usually sudden and patient gives a history of exposure to chill or there may be no apparent precipitating cause and the maximum paralysis is attained in 24 hours of attack.

  • Person complains of preceding pain in the ear for 2 days.
  • There may be loss of taste, watering of eyes and sweating.
  • Loss of frowning movement (forehead cannot be wrinkled) due to involvement of forehead muscle.
  • Eyes cannot be closed due to involvement of eye and eyelid muscles. On attempt of closure of eyes, eyeballs roll upwards and outwards (Bell’s phenomenon).
  • Whistling is impossible. Deviation of mouth to normal side.
  • Cheek puffs out during expiration due to paralysis of muscles around the mouth.
  • Food collects between teeth and the paralyzed cheek and fluid runs out while drinking.

  • Preventing Bell’s Palsy

    • Do not venture out in air as this will worsen the condition. Eat healthy and nutritious food (especially vegetarian food) with lots of fruits and vegetables.
    • Warm fomentation is very useful for stimulating the nerve ends.
    • Taking rest is very important.
    • Exercise is very important in getting the muscles back to normal working. This along with home remedies helps in total recovery. Exercise should be done at least 4 to 5 times in a day.

    Home Remedies for Bell’s Palsy

    • Fomentations wrung out of mullein, lobelia or chamomile tea is useful for stimulation of the nerve endings.
    • Bilberry contains flavonoid compounds which helps stimulation of nerve which has been paralyzed.
    • Until the problem clears up one should place charcoal poultice over the weakened nerve area at night and maintain a low salt diet.
    • After the muscles start little functioning, one should follow these exercises – Stand in front of a mirror and produce wrinkles on the forehead, affected eye should be closed, lips pursed and moving your mouth from one side to the other side. Try making  whistling sound and blowing out your cheeks. These exercises should be done slowly and with strength for at least 4 to 5 times in a day.
