What Is Vasomotor Rhinitis? Triggers, Symptoms & Natural Remedies

What Is Vasomotor Rhinitis? Triggers, Symptoms & Natural Remedies . Vasomotor rhinitis is a nasal condition characterized by running or stuffy nose. It is a non-allergic and non-infectious form of rhinitis. The exact cause of vasomotor rhinitis is not clear, but it is believed to occur due to certain triggers; environmental conditions such as cold dry air, change in atmospheric pressure, different odors (perfumes, cigarette smoke, paint etc) spicy food, medicines, tobacco smoke etc.

The prominent symptoms are running nose, congestion, and obstruction of nasal passage. In vasomotor rhinitis itching and sneezing are less common. The condition is chronic with episodes of frequent exacerbation.

The symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis can be treated, but complete cure is difficult.

Triggers For Vasomotor Rhinitis

The etiology of vascular rhinitis is unknown. An abnormality in the nerve endings inside the nasal mucosa is being blamed. In this condition the blood vessels inside the nasal lining expand and they are filled with blood and fluid. This results in swelling of nasal lining, watering and congestion of nose.

Although the exact cause is not clear; there are several triggering factors that aggravate the condition or initiate the process.

  • Environmental pollution: Exposure to tobacco smoke, dust particles, strong odor perfumes, chemical fumes etc can be the cause.

  • Eating too much of spicy food, alcohol can lead to swelling inside the nasal lining.
  • Certain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and medicines for high blood pressure (beta blockers). Excessive use of decongestant nasal spray can lead to vasomotor rhinitis.
  • Emotional stress, sexual arousal (honeymoon rhinitis), exercise.
  • Hormone changes during pregnancy, menopause.
