Urinary Tract Infection Information

A urinary tract infection, often abbreviated as UTI, is an ailment caused by bacteria. It affects any part of the urinary tract, thus its name. Urine contains waste products that the body produces as well as other components. However, it does not normally contain bacteria.

A patient suffering from UTI will experience the following symptoms:

  • Pain during urination

  • Frequent urination

  • Inability to urinate despite the urge

  • Cloudy urine

  • Smelly urine

  • Bloody urine

  • Fever

  • Malaise or lethargy

  • Abdominal discomfort

Women are more prone to having UTIs than men because the urethra is shorter and is closer to the anus than compared with males.

Home Remedies For Urinary Tract Infections

If the patient suspects that he/she has urinary tract infection, he/she can opt to go to a doctor to ask for some medication. The first option is for the patient to take antibiotics to control the growth of bacteria.

Still, it is also possible to try home remedies that can be easily created from common ingredients found in the kitchen. Here are some home remedies worth trying:

  • Flush out the bacteria and dilute the urine by drinking plenty of water. This can also help those who are having difficulty in passing urine.

  • Baking soda is very useful and can be used for more than just baking. This can be used to help treat urinary tract infection. The mixture is created by adding a ¼ tsp of baking soda to a glass of water. Dissolve the powder in the water thoroughly and drink this mixture.

  • Cranberry juice in its pure form is also a good home remedy for UTI as it prevents bacteria from clinging to the lining of the urinary tract. Find cranberry juice that is not the mixed with other juices. The freshly made juice is preferable. Drink this every day. Add pure apple juice to this for variety.

  • Drink fresh berry juice.

  • Coriander seeds can also be used as a cure for UTI. Just boil some of these seeds in a pot of water. Strain it. Drink a couple of tablespoons of this mixture. Do this twice a day.

  • Apply a heating pad or hot pack on the abdomen to reduce discomfort but do not make the pack too hot.

  • Avoid irritating the bladder further by avoiding liquids like coffee, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages.
