6 Causes of Smelly Urine
Smelly urine is sometimes linked to lack of enough water intakes and the presence of minor infections like vaginitis and UTI. However, in some cases, smelly urine can be an indication of medical conditions.


Causes for Smelly Urine

  • Urinary Tract Infection: Urinary tract infection or UTI is an infection that can affect the urinary tract system especially the urethra and bladder. Between men and women, the latter frequently suffer UTI. Symptoms of urinary tract infection may include burning sensation while urinating and strong pungent smell of the urine. If the infection is severe, it may also lead to high fever and chills.

  • Vaginitis: Vaginitis is another possible culprit of smelly urine. The condition is normally caused by bacteria or fungal infection. Symptoms associated with vaginitis are strong smell of urine, vaginal discharge, vaginal itchiness and painful urination.

  • Prostitis: This condition affects men since it is characterized as the swelling of the prostate gland. Some causes of prostitis are bacterial however, some cases can be non-bacterial. Symptoms of prostitis are pain, fever, nausea and chills.

  • Kidney stones: Having kidney stones may also result to cloudy urine. Symptoms associated with kidney stones are smelly urine, pain in the pelvic region and groin area.

  • Liver problems: Foul smelling urine may also indicate liver disease. Urine changes may indicate that your liver is not working efficiently.

  • Dehydration: Lack of fluid intake may lessen the urine volume and makes it highly concentrated. When fluid intake is very little, there may be changes in the smell and the color of the urine. If the urine is highly concentrated, it can be compared to the smell of ammonia. The ammonia smell in the urine may indicate dehydration.
