7 Diseases of the Skeletal System
The two hundred six bones of skeletal system are capable of giving a strong framework in the tissues, muscles and organs. The skeletal structure can also protect the organs and allow the body to move around. But like any other diseases, skeletal system diseases may affect the body.



Diseases of the Skeletal System

  • Arthritis: This is an inflammatory disease that affects the joints and spinal column. Symptoms associated with arthritis are inflammation, stiffness and joint pain. People suffering with arthritis may complain of reduced mobility. The most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

  • Leukemia: This type of cancer that affects the lymphatic cells. It is characterized as the formation of abnormal white blood cells, which lowers your capacity to fight infection.

  • Osteoporosis: This is a condition where the bones become brittle because of excessive loss of bone tissue. Osteoporosis may also lead to fracture of the hips and spine.

  • Osteomalacia: Osteomalacia or also known as rickets may result to weakening and softening of the bone tissue. This is commonly caused by lack of vitamin D. This condition normally affects children.

  • Cancer of the bones: Cancer of the bones is typically rare condition. People with cancer of the bones may have bone pain and fatigue. Cancer of the bones may affect any type of bones however, it normally affects the arms and the legs.

  • Spina Bifida: Spina bifida is birth defect that affects the formation of the spinal column while the baby is still inside the womb. This can be treated while the baby is still inside but some babies who did not received treatment had excessive fluid in the brain.

  • Scoliosis: This is a curvature that is observed in the spinal cord. This condition is normally seen in adolescents. There is really no exact cause that may determine the root of scoliosis however, some medical experts believed genetic plays an important role.
