Carbonated water or also referred as seltzer or soda water is composed of dissolved carbon dioxide gas in water. As the carbon dioxide reacts with the water, it forms carbonic acid, thus resulting the water to turn slightly sour. Seltzer water health risks can harm the body, though it may contain sodium, phosphorus and potassium, still it may have some health risks especially if taken in very large quantities.


Seltzer Water Health Risks

  • Acidity: Seltzer water is considerably acidic because of the presence of carbonic acid. Normally, blood is alkaline and the pH level is always maintained at around 7.35, if you add extra acidic liquids in the system, it may create into an imbalance. To counteract the process, your system may expel some minerals from bones to blood. This may boost the process of oxidation in your body, which may result to harmful creation of free radicals. Typically, carbonic acid is transported in the blood as part of respiration but too much carbonated water may be misinterpreted by the body as a stressor, especially if it is taken in large quantities.

  • Damages tooth enamel: Seltzer water can damage tooth enamel and may increase tooth cavities. The reason behind this is not really sugar content but more of the carbonation process. Pure seltzer water may not really have sugar but the acidity it has due to the carbonic acid may be damaging to tooth enamel especially if it is taken in huge quantities.

  • Loss of calcium from bones: Calcium depletion is possible when seltzer water is taken. Carbonated water has phosphorus, which can interfere with the metabolism of calcium.

  • High blood pressure: Some manufacturers of seltzer water add some salt for extra flavor, however, too much salt can make the heart work harder, thus, resulting to increase in blood pressure. High blood pressure may increase your risks of cardiovascular disease and kidney disorders.
