Causes and Treatments of Dry Skin around Mouth
Dry skin around mouth may result to dryness, redness and soreness. It may even have cracked appearance around the edges of your mouth. There are several factors, which may result to dry skin around the mouth. The treatment of you condition may vary depending on the culprit of the dry skin.

Causes of Dry Skin around Mouth

• Skin condition: A skin condition like perioral dermatitis can cause small bumps that may form around your mouth. There is really no clear cause why these red bumps appear however, facial creams that contain too much steroids can be a significant factor.


• Xerostomia: Xerostomia or much known as dry mouth occurs when you are not creating the required saliva. Aside from this condition, other factors like incontinence and medications to lower high blood pressure can also cause dry mouth.


• Cracked lips: When your lips are cracked, you are at high risk of developing dryness around the mouth area. Some possible causes of cracked lips are too much sun exposure and spending long hours in cold or dry weather.


• Stress: When a person is under stress, he or she is at risk of developing dry skin not just around the mouth but other areas of the body as well. Likewise, individuals that are under too much pressure may be more prone to scratching or rubbing their skin, which may result to more skin problems.


• Treatments


• Vaseline: Placing some Vaseline may add moisture to your lips as well as to the nearby areas of the mouth. You can place some of the petroleum jelly to moisturize the dryness of corners of the mouth as well as other parts of your body.


• Oral antibiotic: For severe cases of perioral dermatitis, you may take oral antibiotic tetracycline to treat your condition.


• Topical creams: Topical creams like clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide and tacrolimus can also be used to treat perioral dermatitis.


• Alcohol free mouthwash: If you have dry mouth, it is best that you use alcohol free mouthwash. Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol since alcohol can add more dryness.
